Understanding Sources & Citations
Understand inline citations and the source overview panel.
Every answer in Respeak is based on specific passages in your documents. To help you trace where each piece of information comes from, Respeak shows you source references and a full source overview.
Source References in the Answer
Inside the AI Summary you will find superscript numbers (e.g. [1], [2], [3]). Each number points to a specific passage in one of your documents. Click a superscript number to open the corresponding source in the source viewer - it appears as a sidebar on the right-hand side. You can also click directly on the answer text to open the first source.
The Source Overview
Below the AI Summary you will find the complete source overview. Sources are organized into three categories:
Cited Sources
These sources were directly used and cited in the AI Summary. Each cited source shows you the following details:
Detail | Description |

Number | Matches the superscript number in the answer (e.g. 1, 2, 3). |
Document name | The name or URL of the source. |
Text excerpt | A short passage from the document. |
Relevance | A percentage showing how well the source matches your question. |
Page / Timestamp | Page number (for PDFs) or timestamp (for audio/video files). |
Hybrid Results
These sources were found through both content-based and keyword-based search but were not directly cited in the answer. They may still contain useful additional information.
Additional Keyword Results
These sources were found exclusively through keyword search. They could be relevant but were not used for the summary.
Opening a Source
Click any source in the source overview to open it in the source viewer. There you will see the original document with the relevant passages highlighted (see View Documents in the Source Viewer for more details).
Why Multiple Categories?
Respeak searches your knowledge base in two ways: Content-based search finds passages that are semantically related to your question, even if the exact words do not match. Keyword search finds passages that contain specific keywords from your question.
Combining both methods ensures you get as much relevant information as possible. The cited sources are the most important ones - they form the foundation of the AI Summary.
